Mexico's Braskem-Idesa PE heard offered into Africa: sources

Polyethylene product from Mexico’s Braskem-Idesa begins to establish a trade flow into Africa, sources said Wednesday.

Braskem-Idesa, a joint venture between Brazil’s Braskem (75%) and Mexico’s Grupo Idesa (25%), was unavailable for comment.

One trader said that he had done a deal last month, and received a second offer this month. He added that they could also be offering to Europe or Turkey.

"We previously used product from Brazil but that stopped about five years ago...this new shale fed plant in Mexico should help them keep prices down so we can fix things into Africa more regularly," an African trader said.

Braskem-Idesa’s first line, a high-density polyethylene line, began operations April 6, and the second line came online April 28.

Operations began with injection grade HDPE followed by blowmolding HDPE. The LDPE line planned for start up on May 15.
